Falling down the archive.org rabbit hole 1/2?: Highland Bagpipe LPs
Here are 21 highland bagpipe LPs that I discovered at archive.org,
digitized from the original vinyl.
I think my parents LP collection had at least half of them, so they
are quite familiar to me.
This collection has a couple of interesting entries:
-
I originally thought that there were 2 copies of the
1959 Highland Pageantry - The Regimental Band And Pipes And Drums Of The Black Watch
and
1959 Highland Pageantry - The Regimental Band And Pipes And Drums Of The Black Watch
.
Digging deeper, I discovered they were both published by RCA in 1959, with different catalog numbers: RCA Victor LSP-1525 and LPM-1525.
They have slightly different front covers (mirror image of the same photo is used), with LSP having a banner overlaid on the top saying "LIVING STEREO...Stereo-Orthophonic High Fidelity Recording", slightly different back covers (both have same text blurb and photo, with a different ordering of the track listings and the heading with the title, artist, leads). Where they completely significantly is on the bottom right of the back cover: the LSP says it is a "TRUE STEREOPHONIC RECORDING" whereas the LPM indicates it is an "RCA Victor "New Orthophonic" High Fidelity Recording". According to Wikipedia, the prefixes indicate stereo (LSP) and mono (LPM) recordings:"Non-classical LP record albums were issued with the prefix "LPM". When RCA Victor began issuing classical LPs in stereophonic sound in 1958, the prefix "LSC" was used. Non-classical stereo LPs were issued with the prefix "LSP". " - https://en.wik`ipedia.org/wiki/RCA_Records#1950s
These recordings were published (1959) just after (1958) RCA made the changes described in the wikipedia article. So, mystery solved: LPM-1525 is the mono recording; LSP-1525 is the stereo version. OK, the cover of LSP-1525 saying "STEREO" was a bit of a giveaway! - The 1950 Kilts On Parade - St. Columcille's United Gaelic Pipe Band entry is not mysterious, it just suffers from not having individual tracks separately digitized: each side of the record is digitized as a single audio file. So it has only two audo tracks, one "track" per side.
"Recordings made available under the Music Modernization Act. A reasonable search has been conducted to determine that these items are not commercially available. Please be aware that subsequent uses may not be permitted under US copyright such as reproduction, distribution, display or public performance." - https://archive.org/details/unlockedrecordings?tab=about
You should consult legal representation to determine if/how you may use these recordings in your jurisdiction.
Here is the M3U playlist for these LPs.
NB: This playlist uses remote URLs for the tracks: you download the playlist for whatever app you use to listen to music; the URLs point to the audio tracks stores at archive.org. No local copy. Tracks are streamed from archive.org. Of course, if you are not on WIFI while listening to these on your device you will be using up your data. Caveat emptor.
